I Was Born About 4,000 Years Ago performed by Scott Crothers (aka Diesel Bodine). For fun, I created a barrage of distractions to discombobulate the singer (me). Included in the music, I sang and played my old 1967 Martin 00-18 and 6-string Banjo. Hope you like it!

623 comments. Scott Crothers has the most. But he is going nowhere. He is on youtube. If I were him I would tell people about that. Otherwise, he will lose fans.

Translators are very useful, sometimes . . . they make very literal translations and it's risky . . . you can be missunderstood very easyly . . .

@Dusty Poss: Singing and playing the song, creating the music, and making the video were a labor of love, fun and what I hope will be considered Contest-winning creativity. The most difficult part has been trying to get lots of folks to vote daily. I'm a truck driver by day and have been for decades. I've had little time to create a vast network of people over the years who could rush in to help me with massive vote margins in this Contest, but I'm overjoyed and so thankful for those that have been helping! Without them, I never would have got as far as I have in the Contest.
Dusty Poss said...
I love the humor in the background images you chose for this. You look like you're having a real good time. Not an easy trick when such hard work is involved!
Scott Crothers said...
@BlancheNoE: Decades and decades of great music were all recorded analog. I have a love of the digital realm, but most of my CD Library is digitalized analog recordings.
BlancheNoE said...
whoops, make that the NAMM show,..it's been a while. When I was 19 I was working for a music store/ recording studio and when we got our 16 track Fostex rig we thought we were Emperors. Hidden away in the back office was one of the first personal computers made by Apple to hit St. Louis. Who would have guessed that little box would someday dwarf the capabilities of our 1500 square foot studio.
I still love analog. It is NOT dead, dammit.
Scott Crothers said...
@BlancheNoE: I have a nice Audio-Technica that I used to use when recording into my analog recorder & ADAT, but since I've been making music & videos using my computer I've been simplifying my techniques. Someday (soon) when I re-establish myself into a new home, I hope to re-incorporate some of my older peripherals into the audio recordings. I'd love to have a Ribbon Mic and run it through a tube pre-amp to get that vintage sound. It's cool Mr. Dunlop gave you all those picks! 8-)
BlancheNoE said...
Concerning your comment back from yesterday, YES ! back in the day the SM58 was my favorite for recording instruments and I used a Beyerdynamic m300 for vocals,...and my favorite picks are Dunlops too !!! I was at a NAM show in Chicago one time when a nice, greying gentlemen came up and asked me what sort of picks I preferred ( I was trying out a guitar) and I said " the Dunlop mediums "....it turned out it was Jim himself !
I followed him back to his booth and he gave me a whole bag of 'em. I still have about 50 left so let me know if you're running low. I love it that you just used your vid mic to record the vocals. Only someone who can actually sing can pull that off. Great job Scott.
Scott Crothers said...
@Beth: This is not just a numbers game to me. Each vote represents a real, flesh-and-blood human being. The interaction with my supporters I feel represents the best example of what I believe this Contest was meant to be... a "social media event."
Beth said...
Sorry..I forgot to say that I think you may be the only finalist that is taking the time to have a genuine conversation with your commentors Sir..very nice of you.
Beth said...
I think you play very well...good luck Sir.
Scott Crothers said...
@Patricia Delluva: Thanks, Patty! I not only sought to play the tune as best I could, but wanted to make the video entertaining on a variety of levels. I wanted it to be colorful, with a lot of action and eye-candy to stimulate thoughts in the viewer, to make it an experience. I sought to make it humorous and fun, while still maintaining the feel of the song from so many decades ago. I've been pleased with the positive Comments, especially ones that show the viewer has been taking notice of the details that went into the video, both musically and visually.
Scott Crothers said...
@Sharon C.: I gladly accept that encouragement, Sharon, as this has been a tough competition! If only I knew more people to help with the votes, but it's almost over now.
Scott Crothers said...
@Rick Bodnar: LOL! I prefer 1 mm. Jim Dunlop Nylon Picks. There are other companies making similar type picks, but I do like the ones that have a textured feel to them as they tend to not slip out from my fingers accidentally when I'm playing. I occasionally may use a lighter pick for strumming. There are picks made of polished stone that I'd like to try, but they are rather expensive.
Scott Crothers said...

@BlancheNoE: The vocals and acoustic guitar were recorded with the microphone built into my Apple iSight camera and I also used an old Shure SM58 for other stuff, like the 6-string Banjo. Alright! To Scott : I can't believe I haven't asked yet, what did you use to record this ?,... and I'm also very curious about what microphones you use. If you tell me the answer I just might might buy you that guitar,...I suddenly have some room on a credit card.

@Joey Arnold: A couple of days. I either tried to illustrate key words/ideas in the song or sought to create visually a play on words, for instance, the Fall of Babylon refers to Babylon being conquered, but I used falling leaves as if Babylon was being scene in the Autumn time.
Joey Arnold said...
How long did it take to make this video? By the way, this video (out of this top five) has the most special effects or the most creative different backgrounds. You could win just for that. Where did you come up with all of those ideas for this video. I thought it was clever.
I like that 1940's saying of a cup of Joe or a cup of coffee. There must be a lot of cool old sayings that the younger generations don't know about anymore. And yet, they should know about them.
Scott Crothers said...
@Scott Murray: Hmmm... I can just imagine the tone quality it would have.
Be nice to run through some chord progression like:
B7b5 / Em9 / A7b5 / Dm9 /
F#7#5#9 / B7#5b9 / Em9 / Em6 /
or do some Bluegrass pickin', Blues, Rockabilly, anything for that matter!

I'm really enjoying this contest too. You know, they should format a television show that is something like this,...where talented singers face off for a record deal and bragging rights and the worship of the masses and a big bronze statue in the likeness of the winner. They could call it " American Idolatry ",...nawwww, it would never fly.

I agree that online conversations has their limitations. But so does real face-to-face conversations. I mean, of course it is usually easier when you can actually see the person you're talking to. But the risks still exists there too.

Scott Crothers said...
@Joey Arnold: People have been free to say whatever they're going to say. It seems reasonable to expect most of the banter reflected by the Comments is between my supporters/well-wishers and myself. I have developed a protocol over the years through trial and error expressing myself textually online. The words alone do not always convey the exact meaning of what's being said sans vocal inflection, facial expression, etc. that a person-to-person conversation in-person has to offer. For example: humor can oft times be taken the wrong way, generalizations can be taken as absolutes, and misunderstandings as to use of the vernacular can take on a life of their own.
Joey Arnold said...
Youtube is a video sharing site, but they also have contests, too.
BlancheNoE said...
OH,...and that last comment was not aimed at Joey Arnold but some other posters who shall remain nameless. ,....and to Joey, I know what you mean but I think that conversation is more for a video sharing sight as opposed to a contest thread,...but yeah, it's hard to compare for sure.
Joey Arnold said...

William tollan said...

BlancheNoE said...
UMmmm, to the posters who are being less than courteous, Simma' DOWN now and try to act like your mommas raised you right. All the contenders here are very talented and this is supposed to be about fun and the love of music. Remember that Scott's friends are a reflection on him to the judges. That being said, Scott, we plugged in our JBLs for the first time to listen instead of using the computer speakers and DAY-umm ! Every instrument on there sounds phenomenal ! Fine playing, indeed Scott. I still can't figure how you got that old locomotive to fit in yer studio though. People, if you really want to HEAR this, use good headphones or plug in some good speakers.
Patricia Cassera said...
Good stuff!
Joey Arnold said...
So you are saying that a comment thread's purpose is to simply be a place for people to say "Good job" on it and that is it?
Joey Arnold said...
@ Scott: my curious comes mostly because I feel like we will not get an opportunity to talk about this after the competition. Unless if you were to come find me at facebook.com/JoeyArnold but other than that I just felt like I didn't want to miss this opportunity of a lifetime that may never come again ever.
Joey Arnold said...
For example, Simon Cowell of American Idol is full of constructive criticism: people's desire to hate him is their own fault.
Joey Arnold said...
I think that the definition of light-hearted or small-talk conversation is highly debatable, and talking deeply about something doesn't automatically make something not fun. I mean, unless if you think that school isn't fun.
Scott Crothers said...
@Frida: Thank-you, Frida! 8-)

Scott Crothers said...
@Joey Arnold: I appreciate your curiosity, but it would be understandably hard for folks to assume that I could be non-biased, especially at this time during the final days of the Contest. I do have my thoughts on the matter, as could be expected. It would be ill-advised posting such opinions publicly here on this Comment Thread. You must remember, you're asking such a question to the supporters of my video. I'm hoping to keep this Comment Thread fun & light-hearted and not bring up the potential pros and cons of other Contestants videos, or mine, to be debated here. I hope that my Response finds favor with you. 8-)

How do you guys compare this version of I Was Born About 4,000 Years Ago that was sung by this guy here, Scott Crothers, and that other guy, Sawyer Frye? Two different kinds of styles. Both a little different than the original. What do you guys think about the pros and cons of the differences or similarities between the two? I want to hear from Scott, too. What do you think? I do really love your version. You put the comedic touch to it, and the wise outlook to it, too. It is almost like you really are four thousand years wise.

@NatureJunkie: I also wanted to add that the "She'll Be Coming 'Round The Mountain When She Comes" song evolved from an earlier Afro-American Spiritual tune. With the original composer unknown, that puts the song/melody in the Public Domain, free to enhance, alter or do with as one chooses. So if Arkie had purposefully used the melody to base his tune on, he wasn't creating an unfair usage issue. Now, how's that for a Response! 8-)
Scott Crothers said...
@NatureJunkie: Time for the more in-depth Response I said I'd make. The similarities between the 2 songs are easy to recognize. The chord progressions are nearly identical.
"She'll Be Coming..." is:
I /// I /// I /// V ///
I/// II/// I/ V/ I ///
"I Was Born About..." is:
I /// I /// I /// V ///
I/// II/// V /// I ///
Very similar!
The melody has certain noticeable variations as well. The one that stuck out in my head when I learned the song was how the melody differs on the line "thousand years ago" compared to the "when she comes" from the other song.
But you're right that the two songs generally sound alike. I made a concerted effort to try to replicate the vocal's melodic nuances as close to Arkie's as I could and not try to sing it as if I was singing "She'll Be Coming Around The Mountain When She Comes."
Scott Crothers said...
@Rick Bodnar: I know you support me winning, but please be nice, Mr. Bodnar. She's really a fine yodeler. I really love the sound of yodeling. There are different varieties as well. I have a CD of European-style yodeling. They really can get intense with the sophistication involved.

NatureJunkie said...
You know, I can't help thinking that Arkie the Arkansas Woodchopper stole the melody of this tune. It sounds like it could be additional verses of "She'll Be Comin' 'Round the Mountain."

Rachel Blankenship said...
I have a lot of love for Scott. I think he is very talented and his video is very creative. As I was looking through his many comments of praise, I noticed a few "semi-accusing" comments about cheating with robots. I assure you we have (After Jack and I'm sure Mikki) worked very hard to accumulate the amount of votes we have. Social networking sites are very helpful in drumming up votes, as well as a large fan base already. If we were not a part of this competition, Scott would have my vote. Don't accuse. Just keep voting for the video you like. :)
Scott Crothers said...
@Joyce: Glad to have ya' spend the morning' with me via video. 8-)

@Timothy J McGraw: I'll have to rest my hopes on the decisions of the Judges. If knowing more people who will vote for you is what truly makes a Winner, then I'll wear the title Loser with pride and dignity, should that be the outcome of this contest.

@Kenrg: I thank you for your help in accomplishing that! I believe in this cause we're fighting for and overcoming the odds stacked against us. Let the best video win! Choosing a Winner solely on the sheer amount of biased voters any contestant can accumulate is not the bottom-line of this contest. Mustang Mikki said...
Amen! I whole-heartedly agree. Thank you and don't worry....if by God's grace I end up with the Martin, I will definately take good care of it.
:)
Scott Crothers said...
@Mustang Mikki: For me, any reason to make a new music video, exploring the wide diversity that music offers, is a joy in itself. I'm not a competitive person at heart. I much rather prefer cooperation between people to competition. I've poured my heart out through songs and have tried to add humor and creativity. I wish all the best to you and everyone involved in this project we've undertaken. May the prizes find good homes. If you win, take good care of that Martin. I know I would. Trying to establish a growing voter base while holding down a full-time job has consumed so much of my time that I'm only now getting to listen to the other entries. I've enjoyed those that I've been able to listen to so far. With friendly regards. 8-)

So sorry it took so long to reply to your comment from a week ago, Mr. Crothers!
Yeah, I know what you meant about the "quitting your day-job" phrase....I was thinking I was gonna have to quit school in order to keep it up! :)
I know alot of my friends were giving me the minute-by-minute update...."Mr. Crother's ahead...now Mikki's ahead...." :)
It really made it enjoyable, though; kinda added some fuel to a wonderful contest with some REALLY GOOD competition!
8-)
You really did a WONDERFUL job with all three of your songs, Mr. Crother....I enjoyed listening (and re-listening) to all of your videos multiple times.
I would have voted for you too, but...... :)
Wishing You Good Luck and God Bless!!

@Sharon C.: Not late, plenty of time left in the day. Hope ya' get that 'puter chuggin' along. My Mac deals with my daily shenanigans, but even Mac's sometimes say, "Enough is enough!" XD

AmyBlanch was here to thoroughly enjoy this again. Thanks !

I'm late getting in here today...a little 'puter problem. Good luck, Scott!

Glad to add another vote...I want you to win!
Scott Crothers said...
@BlancheNoE: No idea. The Judges account for 60% of the outcome and the Votes for 40%. I suppose they may take lots of things into consideration? 8-)
Scott Crothers said...
@Frida: Not that I know of. Maybe up at The Hayloft Gang Headquarters. XD
Scott Crothers said...
@Sharon: I appreciate seeing them come in myself. 8-)
Scott Crothers said...
@Charles: Cool! Maybe I'll make a video out of it. XD
Scott Crothers said...
@William T.: I'm going... and going... and going... that's what Elephants do. XD
Scott Crothers said...
@Lorrie: Thanks, Lorrie! 8-)
BlancheNoE said...
So are these votes counted by IP address or e-mail address ?,...'cause someone less than honest could just open a bunch of e-mail accounts to cheat. I hope the final judging is determined by the judges and not the clicks. I only ask because there seems to be some vids with not nearly as many views and comments but a lot more votes. Jus' sayin'.
You rock, Scott, and your videos always have so much pre and post work framing your awesome talent.

@Frida: Thank-you... I'll be needing all the luck I can get. 8-)
Scott Crothers said...
@Josh Musick: Doesn't seem feasible, since anyone could just say they voted for dozens of their friends. I think that's why they have the Log-In to insure a honest vote... not that I'm saying you'd be dishonest, but it would wind up with burden of proof scenarios that I doubt the Contest Sponsors want to delve in to.
Scott Crothers said...
@Suja: Thanks so much for your support in this, Suja!

I'm posting this around, so it might get seen by someone that knows... Does anyone know if its permissible to vote for people? Basically, I had some people say they wanted to vote for me, but asked me to do it. Is this legal?
